Welcome Sweet Baby Boy

Our son was born at 9:18 this evening, and mom and baby are doing great. He was 8 pounds, 11 oz. (what??), we were able to walk over to the hospital on a beautiful summer evening and had him just over an hour after we arrived.
Transition and pushing still suck, no matter what the Hypnobirthing lady tells me on those tapes. After the joy of looking at my beautiful son (who looks just like his daddy did as an infant), I experienced the greatest happiness today knowing that I never have to do that again.
But I'm happy to say that the rest of the labor was really quite manageable. I started feeling contractions while sitting down at aroun 1:30 p.m., and I spent the afternoon resting, getting some baby stuff done (realized mid-afternoon that we had never laundered the cover to the infant car seat, nor even sponged it off! ick!), listening to the Cub game, and making and eating dinner. After dinner we put our stuff in the wagon and walked over.
Epu was truly the best birth partner ever. For every contraction while we walked, I would hang on him with my arms around his shoulders, taking so much of the pressure off my back and abdomen. I'd waggle my hips around in a circle and before I knew it the 60 seconds or so had passed. We left the house with contractions just under 5 minutes, and by the time we got to the hospital 30 minutes later they were at just under 4. We got checked, found out I was at 7 c.m., and then had to be monitored for 20 minutes in triage, which was the second worst part.
The worst part was when the pressure of contractions became pretty much constant back pressure, but at least this time around since I knew I was pretty dilated and remembering how this feeling heralded pushing time, I was encouraged.
I got in the bath in the alternative birthing room and it was only a few pushes before the head crowned. That was a huge surprise to me as it's usually taken me a lot longer to get to that point. But still, you know, I was in agony. Even in the water, those strong pushing contractions feel like hell. And then once he crowned, much like my other babies, he just would not pass that doorstep. I pushed and pushed, putting my hand down there to feel him absolutely bulging out of me. We tried different positions, and finally once we drained most of the water and got me onto the birthing stool I felt progress. A few more difficult and agonizing pushes, and he was out.
I'll tell you more tomorrow. Now it's after 1 a.m. and we really should take advantage of this nice comfy bed we get in the alternative birthing room to get some shut-eye.

YEEEEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

I'm so happy for you!!! I've totally been stalking your blog for weeks! This is the advantage of being 5 hours later, though, getting to still be awake to read the good news FIRST!

Take care and have fun on this little bonding week without the little ladies!

Hey, I feel like we are twins somehow - my daughter was just 8-11 too, and would not come out in the water - I had to get onto the birthing stool too.

Congrats on your gorgeous baby! I definitely can't wait to hear all about your life with three.

Get as much rest as you can!!
