Seems likely lately everyone is trying to show me a video of someone effed up on drugs. It must be the mom in me, because I hate watching this stuff! I even felt creepy watching the famous "kid loopy after the dentist video."
And then I finally looked up the Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman video after seeing Ben Stiller spoof it at the Oscars. OK, I laughed a couple times at both "performances."
But I'm also pissed off. I want to know a) Why would the Letterman show put this guest on just to mock him when he is so obviously incapable of doing the job? and b) Why is it funny to make fun of a guy who is obviously in a bad way, when his brother already died from drugs? Will Ben Stiller and David Letterman give eulogies at Joaquin's funeral?
I guess Joaquin Phoenix brings out the mama bear in me because I'll always think of him as the troubled, hurting little boy in Parenthood
Maybe I'm sucking all the fun out of an anemic February entertainment scene, but when someone comes up for public ridicule, it wouldn't hurt to remember that they, too, were once somebody's little boy or girl.

Wow. I hadn't seen the video of Joaquin on Letterman, but when I watched it just now, I gotta say I felt pissed, just like you. I also felt very, very sorry for him.
I, too, love me some Joaquin and hope he is able to turn things around.
Maybe it's the Puritan in me, but the kid after the dentist just looked like a drunk child. Not funny.
And Ben Stiller was being rude to the cinematographers whose names he and Natalie Portman were supposed to be celebrating. Not smart, Ben, to dis the people who light your face. Kind of like insulting your own writers. I bet Stiller looks muddy and tired in his next movie.
Wow - that was just disturbing. I feel like the crew at Letterman should have cancelled his appearance when he showed up in that state.
Well, as bad as that video was, I have to wonder why the heck would he agree to go on the show in the first place if he planned on being wasted? I don't understand why people set themselves up. For that reason, I have a hard time feeling too sorry for the guy.
OMG--I can't believe I never made the connection to Joaquin and the boy from Parenthood!
(i agree with you, by the way)
I'm with you on "Fear and Loathing." I tried to read the book recently, thinking it was one of those literary classics I'd better ingest, and it was horrible. It sure put an un-alluring face on drugs. When the characters aren't powering themselves up on every substance in sight, they're puking their guts out, waving guns around, and screaming at each other.
Sounds like the movie's about as palatable, even if it is Johnny Depp.
