Mommy Is Unschooled in the Ways of Magic

To me the most fun thing about parenting isn't getting to play with toys again or even having someone around who hasn't heard any of my jokes. It's watching little brains develop.

What really blows my mind is when Nutmeg comes up with something I would have never, never thought of. That's when it really hits me that this creature we created is its own little person with its own original thoughts and ideas. Yikes.

Like this conversation we had on the way back from Lollapalooza last week*:

Me: (After explaining the potty training method espoused in the book Toilet Training in Less Than a Day, which involves putting a doll that wets on the potty first) When Pebbles is ready, you can help her learn to use the potty.
Nutmeg: Yeah. Like, I could use my magic to make the doll come alive. So it could pull its own training pants up and down, and then it could show Pebbles better.
Me: Hmm. I was thinking you could use the potty yourself so she could watch you.
Long pause while I wrap my brain around that idea.
Me: Well, I guess if you made the doll come alive, then Mommy wouldn't have to have any more kids. Cause then we could just keep the living doll as our third sister, huh?
Nutmeg: But -- how could it grow?

Um, also something I didn't think of.

* Epu took her to Lolla on one of the afternoons, and I came downtown to meet them and some friends.

It could grow through magic. And maybe she could make it so the living doll was already potty trained. I love when kids have the answers.
