And Now I Will Stop Droning About Baby Sleep. Well, Right After This.

Well, it seems like it was not a fluke. Bedtime has really drastically improved for Pebbles after just one night of crying. Last night she was asleep at 7:15 p.m. Same drill: I put her down awake and hung around her bedroom, mostly with my hand on her back, while she put herself to sleep. She did have a lengthy wakeup between 15 p.m. and 11 p.m. this time though.

However, I would like to report Dr. Marc Weissbluth for being a big liar-pants. He said that when I put my baby to sleep early, she would not wake up earlier. Nay, he said it on multiple pages, and in break out boxes.

And this is not true. Pebbles was up at 6:40 a.m. this morning, compared to maybe 7:15 yesterday and more like 7:45 in days prior to that.

That's not so bad. The target is 12 hours of nighttime sleep, and she seems to want only 11.5, which is also in the acceptable range. However, part of this Dr. Weissbluth's theory is that if you put your baby to bed super early for a few days, she will sleep extra, become more well-rested in general, and take better naps.

OK, OK, this could not be more boring, I know. Did I tell you that Pebbles has added egg yolks, cheese and pears to her list of foods she will willingly eat (bringing it to a grand total of 5)? Or that when she sees a dog, she says, "d - d -dg" and then makes a raspberry noise with her lips that we can only guess is imitating a dog bark? Or that she thinks everything furry is a dog, including herself in her hand-me-down monkey costume?

DOG! That's so cute. We have to get her over here to see Ada so we can hear her chatting!

I know this is going to sound completely crazy, but moving the bedtime up (gradually) even earlier might stop the early morning wake-ups. It's counterintuitive, but it was our experience. EJ went to sleep between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m., work up at around 7:30-8:00 a.m., then was down for a morning nap by 10:00. Her afternoon nap varied---usually around 1:30, but she really liked morning naps, so if they were longer, she fell asleep a little later in the afternoon. We eventually got that switched, too, over time, until she dropped the a.m. nap.

Now, at age 2, EJ goes to bed between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. (at the latest), wakes up at 7:00 a.m., and naps flexibly in the afternoon (depending on our schedule).

One final (totally unrelated note): we all have a cold, and EJ's slightly lowered voice sounds like Nutmeg. Both of us noticed it tonight---it is so cute!

Hmm. I should try that. I'm a little hesitant to go any earlier with daylight savings ending, but what you say is very attractive. How long did she sleep that long? That's like, 15, 16 hours of sleep!

It's not boring, the sleep stuff. I'm avidly reading what you're experiencing so that I get some good ideas for Jellybean, when he shows up. I know it will be a while before I can try to get him on a schedule, but I'm filing away ideas already. I don't do well without sleep, so it will benefit everyone around me if I can get our kiddo to sleep.
