In 2000, Chile started enriching flour with folic acid, and as a result the rate of neural tube defects such as spinal bifita dropped by 40 percent. The cost? One cent per person, per year.

On a smaller scale, people are realizing the benefits of folic acid. Now it's available in the same pill as a prenatal vitamin. How convenient!
